used tesla buying checklist
A Tesla tells you more about itself than any other used car - if you know which screens to look at. Work through this list and you'll know more about the car than most sellers do.
Screens to photograph (before money moves)
- Odometer - matches the ad and the title.
- Software/About screen - VIN, software version, and computer generation.
- Autopilot config page - proves which package (Autopilot vs EAP vs FSD) is actually on the car.
- 100% (or high) charge display - your battery health estimate.
- Supercharging status - if the ad claims free Supercharging, verify it's transferable.
- Pending alerts/service screen - open fault codes show here.
On the test drive
- Full-lock turns both directions (listen for suspension/half-shaft clicks).
- Hard acceleration and regen braking - both should be smooth and silent.
- Autopilot engage on a highway stretch, if equipped.
- Every door, window, handle, and seat motor - and falcon doors on a Model X, twice.
- HVAC hot and cold; heat pump cars should heat quickly.
- Check for water in taillights, trunk wells, and frunk seals.
Paperwork & history
- Title status - salvage/rebuilt isn't automatically a dealbreaker, but it must be priced in and disclosed. Filter by title status when you browse.
- VIN check - run a history report; confirm the VIN on the dash, door jamb, and title all match.
- Warranty math - battery/drive-unit warranty runs 8 years from the original delivery date; check what remains.
- Aftermarket work - wraps, tints, and accessories are fine; salvage-grade structural repairs need a professional inspection.
Transfer day
- Bill of sale listing price, VIN, mileage, and any claims (FSD, free Supercharging).
- Seller removes the car from their Tesla account after payment clears; you add it to yours.
- Confirm both key cards hand over and pair.
- Keep the conversation and the paper trail in one place.
Listings carrying the PulseCheck shield have already had VIN, mileage, options and battery health confirmed by the car itself - a good place to start your search.
